Interactive Light Installation // New Commission
-
Interactive light installation featuring individually addressable leds and ancestral Koasati patterns that illuminate and change colors (tribal colors) through passing movement. Custom hardware and software designed by artist. Sound elements possible.
ANCESTRAL «» FUTURES
Below are examples of pre-existing works by X that can be customized and updated to tell our story.
Imagine an interactive living digital archive of every basket ever made by Coushatta members, all 3D scanned and painted in topographical colors. Tribal member names shown below each creation. This example is permanently installed in The Field Museum in Chicago, Illinois in The Native Exhibit Hall. Featuring 3D scans from the museum collection.
Imagine Koasati words illuminating the moving silhouette of children walking through a corridor on their way to kids quest, or a grandparent en route to seven clans. The interaction then speaking the words in an ambient sonic texture, echoing the voices of Coushatta elders. Words of welcome, words of hope, words of luck. This example was created for The Field Museum in Chicago, Illinois and features the voice of Virginia Langley Benavente (Turkey Clan) speaking in Koasati.

X, in collaboration with artist's mother Tina Benavente (Koasati) 2025. Cotton. 2’ x 9’
A series of 3 of 6 VOID_QUILTS are readily available for acquisition. Each measuring 2’ x 9’. They can be seen in detail in the virtual gallery. https://www.studiox.art/voidfuture
Commissioned versions in tribal colors can be created.
Created in collaboration with the artist’s mother, Tina Benavente (Koasati), the quilts function as both object and process—a matrilineal act of storytelling, where fabric carries frequency and color indexes emotion, memory, and myth. Thread by thread, sine waves are stitched into place. Tones shift across the surface like static finding form. As each panel emerged, so too did a new set of symbols—organic geometries, rhythmic disruptions, and chromatic logics that resist literal translation but pulse with ancestral presence.

VOID_STRATA_FACADE
2026
Available // Commission-Ready
-
X proposes the creation of a new iteration of his acclaimed work, VOID_STRATA, re-centering the work through a tribal color palette.
Harnessing materiality, chromatics, and technology, VOID_STRATA metamorphoses reimagined television test patterns into conduits of collective retrospection and Indigenous prophecy.
The piece takes as its historical seed the “Indian-head” test pattern: a black-and-white graphic introduced in 1939, used to calibrate television signals across North America. Its decontextualized depiction of a Native figure—flattened, anonymous, and framed by technical markers—epitomizes the era’s visual colonization.
Reimagining the television test pattern as a living, responsive medium, VOID_STRATA shifts this once-static broadcast tool into a dynamic color field—an evolving language of symbols, frequencies, and form. Through reinterpretation, the pattern becomes a portal: a site where disrupted frequencies and inherited memory converge.

VOID_SIX_STORY_QUILT
2025
Collaboration with Tina Benavente (Koasati)
-
X, in collaboration with artist's mother Tina Benavente (Koasati) 2025. Cotton. 720 in × 36 in | 1828 x 91 cm
VOID_6_STORY_QUILT extends the VOID_STRATA series’ investigation into chromatics, materiality, and technology, forming a layered meditation on memory, absence, and Indigenous futurity. Reimagining the television test pattern as a living, responsive medium, the quilt shifts this once-static broadcast tool into a dynamic textile field—an evolving language of symbols, frequencies, and form.
Created in collaboration with the artist’s mother, the quilt functions as both object and process—a matrilineal act of storytelling, where fabric carries frequency and color indexes emotion, memory, and myth. Thread by thread, sine waves are stitched into place. Tones shift across the surface like static finding form. As each panel emerged, so too did a new set of symbols—organic geometries, rhythmic disruptions, and chromatic logics that resist literal translation but pulse with ancestral presence.
These emergent symbologies are not imposed but revealed through the act of making. They arise from the tension between control and improvisation, between inherited motifs and digital distortion. The result is a six-part story that resists fixed narrative, speaking instead in the language of layered time: nonlinear, multi-voiced, and porous. Towering at the height of a six-story building, the quilt’s monumental scale echoes the magnitude of the histories and futures it holds.
